The National Trust

The National Trust was founded in 1895 to preserve places of historic interest or natural beauty permanently for the nation to enjoy. A registered charity, the National Trust is independent of government and relies on the generosity of its supporters through membership subscriptions, gifts, legacies and the contribution of many thousands of volunteers.

The Trust looks after more than 300 historic houses and gardens, and 49 industrial monuments and mills. In addition, more than 248,000 hectares of countryside and more than 600 miles of coastline are in the care of the charity. Four out of five of the historic houses open to the public run at a loss every year.

More than 2.7 million people are members of the National Trust, and membership details are available by calling 0870 458 4000 or visit us online.
