Welsh National Opera is Europe's busiest touring opera company and the largest provider of touring opera in the UK. Welsh National Opera is a strong cultural ambassador for Wales. Welsh National Opera is at the heart of one of the most exciting arts buildings in Europe - the Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) in Cardiff.
Welsh National Opera tour extensively throughout Wales, the UK and internationally, presenting over 120 main scale opera performances annually, performing to over 150,000 people in Cardiff, Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool, Llandudno, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Plymouth, Southampton and Swansea. In recent years, the Company has showcased exceptional and new programmes of work in London.
Welsh National Opera started as a group of amateurs and over sixty years on, it is an internationally renowned company. Much has changed over the past six decades but the Company retains, at its core, a deep passion for producing exceptional operas. The Chorus and Orchestra of Welsh National Opera are recognised as world-class ensembles by both critics and audiences.
Welsh National Opera has been nominated for, or has won virtually every UK opera prize including, an Evening Standard Award, four Barclays Theatre Awards, two Olivier Awards and seven prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Awards most recently in 2007. Welsh National Opera was also awarded a Classic FM Red F Award as part of Classic FM's 10th birthday celebrations and in recognition of its outstanding contribution to classical music.
