Walpole Awards 2006

20 November 2006
Banqueting House, Whitehall

Guy Salter, Deputy Chairman, of Walpole commented:

"These awards highlighted Britain's position as a hothouse of creative talent encompassing both up and coming designers and world class brands. British Luxury really has come of Age.

This year Walpole adopted a different approach recognising that the power of celebrity has led to the celebrities themselves becoming world famous brands. Kate Moss is a case in point and her inclusion as a finalist for the British Luxury Brand reflects this trend."

Dubbed 'The Luxury Oscars', the Walpole 2006 awards ceremony recognised some of the World's outstanding brands and individuals.

Walpole; the body that represents the British luxury industry, including Burberry, Christie's, Harrods, Jimmy Choo, Purdey, Smythson and Wedgwood, vote annually on Britain's top luxury brand, best emerging luxury brand, creative talent as well as recognising sporting and cultural excellence.

This year's judges included international designer and jeweller Theo Fennell, Wally Olins and Lord March of Goodwood.

Leading wealth management business, Barclays Wealth sponsored the awards together with Nokia, FedEx, Payne and Gunter, Arts & Business and WordWide Communications.

For the first time the British Luxury Industry short-listed an individual as a brand. Kate Moss was a finalist for the British Luxury Brand alongside more traditional brands such as Mulberry, Stella McCartney and Agent Provocateur.

Bamford and Sons which was created by Lady Carole Bamford and now comprises a number of stand alone stores alongside the Daylesford Organic Store was awarded Best Emerging British Luxury Brand.

Other awards given included British Cultural Excellence, awarded to The Royal Shakespeare Company, British Creative Talent which Burberry's Christopher Bailey won and an overall Walpole Award for Excellence given to Sir Tim Rice who attended the ceremony.
